There are steps to take to insure your cat’s health is off to a great start. Cats are one of the two most popular pets in the United States. The reason is obvious – they require little attention. The day to day care of a cat is fairly simple.

The disposition of most cats is aloof and independent. Many a joke has been written about cats being the owner and the owner of the cat being the pet. They decide when they want attention. When called by name, most cats will give the caller a look of indifference. They may, depending upon their particular mood at the time, go to the caller but often they will stay exactly where they are.

Even the roughest of alley cats have a certain elegance and grace that is undeniable. Cats have long been seen as being a superior animal. We often will give them credit for being deep thinkers. Yes, they are interesting animals and a great pet for those who want quiet companion and who demand little attention.

However, there are certain things to must do to insure your cat’s health. When adopting a kitten or cat, the first thing you should do is to bring him to see a veterinarian for a check-up. This should be done within the first week you bring him home.

Bring your cat or kitten in a cat carrier. When picking your kitten, make certain you support his hind quarters (or behind). Place him gently in the carrier.

Be sure to bring a fecal sample for the vet to examine for worms. During this visit, your cat may require certain shots. The vet will check his pulse, and respiration with a stethoscope; palpate (touch and press) his abdominal organs; look at his ears, eyes and teeth; and run through his fur with a flea comb.

Bringing a kitten or cat into your family is a fun and exciting idea. Cats have long been known to be great pets and interesting characters. With a few small steps towards insuring great cat health, you can enjoy years of companionship and entertainment with your new friend.
